Two measures he approved this week create the Watershed Restoration and Conservation Fund, a state account meant to bankroll restoration and flood‑risk projects across the Amite River Basin.

As Ascension Parish and the rest of the Capital Region mark the 10th anniversary of the devastating 2016 flood, Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment is touting newly signed state legislation that creates a dedicated funding source for watershed restoration and flood-risk reduction projects throughout the Amite River Basin.

For the first time, there is a dedicated revenue stream for flood protection for the Amite River Basin.

Officials are spending $30 million in federal funds to improve Bayou Manchac and realign Ward Creek, and parish officials say the project will reduce flooding in the area.
